Underground 3D laser scanning in caves

Two years after scanning the large underground area of the famous Eisriesenwelt in Werfen, Austria, for the first time, RIEGL put into practice a second scanning mission.

In spring 2019, approx. 350 scan positions of the first 2.5 km of the cave labyrinth (the part of the cave open for tourists) have been again acquired within 2 days.

Comparing the new data with the data acquired in 2017 results in a meaningful representation of the ice growth respectively ice decrease.

This was made possible by a new software module for 3D voxel analysis now available with RiSCAN PRO, RIEGL’s operating and processing software for 3D terrestrial laser scan data.
