For an unforgettable European road trip full of scenic routes, sights and experiences, be sure to consider the following routes.
Route 1: The Amalfi Coast, Italy
One of Europe’s most spectacular coastlines: the Amalfi Coast offers stunning views of sheer cliffs, colorful houses and clear blue seas. There are several ways to explore the coast, but most people drive from Positano to Salerno along the S163. This is about 45 kilometers and takes about an hour and a half, but it is well worth setting aside some extra time for photo stops and walks along the coast.
Route 2: The Ring of Kerry, Ireland
The Ring of Kerry is a popular tourist route in western Ireland known for its beautiful countryside views and rugged coastline. The route is about 179 kilometers long and takes about four to five hours to cover, but there are many things along the way to make your trip interesting. For example, visitors can stop at Rossbeigh Beach, a beautiful beach with white sand dunes, or Killarney National Park, which is known for its stunning hiking trails.
Route 3: Rounding Norway’s Fjordland
Norway is a land of contrasts with rugged mountain peaks, glittering glaciers and impressive fjords. One of the best ways to explore this unique country is to take a round trip through the fjordlands. There are several routes you can take, but a popular option is the Flam Railway between Oslo and Bergen. This train ride takes about eight hours, but you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Norwegian landscape. You can also stop in Flåm for a boat trip through Aurlandsfjord to Nærøyfjord, two of the world’s most impressive fjord systems.
Route 4: The Küstenstrasse in Germany
Germany has many beautiful roads that are perfect for road trips, but one of the best is the Küstenstrasse (Bundesstraße 499). This road runs along Germany’s north-western coast and offers beautiful views of the Wadden Sea region, ancient towns and picturesque villages. It is about 500 kilometers long and takes about 10 hours to cover if you include all the stops, but there are plenty of good motels along the way where you can stay overnight if you are not in a hurry.
The ideal transport for your road trip
You can do a road trip with a passenger car just fine, but sometimes you want a little extra space or comfort. Especially if you want to cover a long route, you spend a lot of time in the car. Besides, you have a lot of luggage to take with you, from snacks for the road to clothes and possibly some camping gear. You can hire a passenger van to take along a big group or enough luggage (Dutch: personenbus huren). Or you can hire an even bigger 9 passenger van (Dutch: 9 persoonsbus huren).
Do you already know which route you want to take? Enjoy your road trip!
