When Google Maps was launched in 2005, few could have guessed the way map mashups would permeate the online world. Online maps had been just something you used to get directions or to find the ten nearest grocery stores.
After the devastating earthquake in China, the government is using images and evaluations from satellite pictures to coordinate the emergency services and rescue activities in many areas. In fact, it would be impossible to coordinate the activities of the rescue teams without these satellite images.
Trimble introduced an innovative Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference sensor for infrastructure and network applications —the Trimble NetR3 GNSS reference sensor. Designed to seamlessly integrate into any Trimble VRS (Virtual Reference Station) network or other infrastructure application, the Trimble NetR3 offers a new option for tracking and streaming data.
Spectra Precision announced the addition of the Spectra Precision Nomad data collector running its new Field Surveyor 2.0 field software for its FOCUS 10 Total Stations and EPOCH 25 GPS Systems. The rugged data collector and new field software solution provides increased functionality for surveying applications including topographic data collection, staking and layout, boundary and cadastre, and comprehensive COGO and roading routines.
Infoterra, a provider of geospatial products and services, has launched Rapid Surveyor, a new mobile laser mapping system. Infoterra has invested in the next-generation of laser technology, specifically designed for mobile use, to enable the capture of precise information of the built/natural environment at unrivalled resolution and coverage. For example, Rapid Surveyor can identify and accurately position assets, such as poles and road drainage features, for planning and infrastructure management.
Leica Geosystems, manufacturer of measuring and positioning equipment, unveils its new fully refurbished service facility at its UK headquarters in Milton Keynes. The service workshop features 60 metre internal base line, the latest computer aided diagnostics, new state of the art workstations and ESD (electro static discharge) floor tiles which will allow the service technicians to process any repairs, services and instrument calibration efficiently and effectively, minimising product downtime and maximising instrument productivity.
Optech Incorporated, a manufacturer of advanced lidar survey instruments, announced that Quebec City-based Groupe Alta has added an Optech ALTM Gemini to their remote sensing toolkit. The system was delivered and put into operation in April 2008. The Gemini’s high-altitude capabilities and multipulse operation mode are features that will greatly benefit Groupe Alta in upcoming projects.
Trimble introduced its next-generation rugged handheld computing devices with integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) technology—the Trimble GeoExplorer 2008 series. As one of three models available, the new GeoXH handheld is setting a new mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) industry standard with real-time decimeter (10 centimeter) level positioning accuracy.
Leica Geosystems has been a pioneer in integrating direct IMU georeferencing systems into airborne sensors. The new Leica IPAS20 modular standalone system delivers direct georeferencing for a wide range of airborne sensors such as imaging, LIDAR, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), thermal and multispectral systems. Leica IPAS20 is equipped with the latest GPS/GLONASS technology and a plug and play IMU interface. Leica Geosystems provides a complete airborne workflow that includes software. The workflow includes direct georeferencing of airborne sensor data and camera orientation, flight planning, flight execution, flight evaluation and project management.
