This regular award is made with the aim of promoting the development of forward-looking product ideas and designs especially for applications associated with building within existing buildings. The focus is on exemplary products and system solutions that ease the task of modernization in terms of construction, architecture, economy and efficiency.

Under the patronage of German's Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, the prize for innovation was awarded at the international building fair BAU 2011 in Munich/Germany. With a new record of 238,000 visitors, 25% of whom were from abroad, and more than 2,000 exhibitors, the “BAU” has become the leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems.

The top-drawer 12-member jury had met in the previous autumn at the Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development in Berlin to determine the prize and award winners from the 80 or so nominated ideas behind new products for use in existing and new construction. The prizes and certificates were handed out during a ceremony at BAU 2011.

The BAKA jury praised the many useful functions of the Leica DISTO D8, which "is supplied in a compact, handy case and is hardly larger or heavier than a smart phone." The integrated Bluetooth technology for data transfer and a high-resolution 2.4“ colour display with a digital point finder including 4x zoom impressed the jury.
